In the 1980s one of the biggest fads was the Cabbage Patch dolls. Little girls and boys all over the world were begging for them and parents went on wild searches for them. They sold out; sometimes hours after the stores put them on the shelves. Today, they are still popular among the young and the young at heart. New Cabbage Patch dolls can be found in department stores and older collectibles can be found online.
Xavier Roberts was the father of the Cabbage Patch doll. If you look online for the history youll find extensive web pages about how he came up with this brainchild and his original creation, Little Person dolls. These original dolls were the crazy of the 80s and their history can be very interesting. I remember being the first kids in our small town to have them. Wed all heard about them but Cabbage Patch Kids hadnt even hit our little stores yet. My mom just happened to be in the city at a large department store just after they were stocked and she quickly grabbed two of them one for me and one for my sister. Little did she know how excited we were going to be and how much they would mean to us in the future. We were fascinated by their little adoption certificates, stating their name, and day of birth at the Babyland General Hospital (which still exists in Cleveland, Georgia). We loved that they were unique and we were the only ones to have a doll just exactly like our own. Mine was Miriam. We adopted them quickly and send the certificate out in the mail to make the adoption authentic. My sister, being the younger one, actually collected four of them before she hit her teen years. But these same dolls are still in our households today. Cabbage patch dolls have become a collectible. As much as they were the craze of the 80s they are one of the cult classics that are still around. Youll find them in childrens rooms, in arts and crafts rooms, and in special places in our hearts. I think they that are so special because we can all relate to feeling like we came out of no where and needing someone to take us in and love us. Every once in awhile, we can all remember being young and feeling misplaced in this big world. Cabbage patch dolls are more than just toys. They are a symbol of our past. They are a symbol of humankinds need to care for others. They are a symbol of the goodness that exists in peoples hearts.
